Fishing In Iceland
When targeting Salmon, Sea Trout and Arctic Char, Iceland offers some of the best fishing in the world. Rivers come in all shapes and sizes, from small streams fished easily with single-handed rods to rivers the size of the River Dee in Scotland. The amazing landscape is home to a very stable population of salmon and we are delighted to be associated with one of the countries premier fishing rivers and lodges.
Blanda
Blanda is the largest river in North-West Iceland and runs into the sea at the village of Blönduós. It takes about three hours to drive from Reykjavik [this transfer is included in the price], however, it is also accessible by light aircraft using the local airstrip which takes 30 minutes back to Reykjavik. We can arrange this for those who require.
At the beginning of the season [June], only the lower section of the river is fished by four rods, as the fish tend to hold below the rapids at the head of the canyon. By late June fish begin to run further upstream and the river is opened up to a total of 10 rods fishing over 30km of the river.
By Icelandic standards, Blanda is a large river. An average of 40 meters wide and one to two meters wide making it ideal for fishing with small double-handed rods.
Not only are these numbers extremely high, bordering on the ridiculous, but the ratio of multi-winter salmon/grilse is high. In July one in every 3 fish caught is a MSW fish. It’s also worth mentioning that the salmon in Blanda is 100% from natural stock, there has never been need for any assistance for the Blanda salmon.
Blanda is an ideal destination for those who are looking for serious salmon fishing, both in regards to the size of each salmon and quantity of salmon caught.
By Icelandic standards, Blanda is large and fast-flowing, something that a hooked salmon will use to its advantage.
Every summer there are stories from anglers of large salmon hooked and lost. This is one of the things that drew me to Blanda. most people I know want the chance of catching a bigger fish and have the story to tell.
The season runs from 5 June to 20 September. Blanda offers some of the best early season fishing in Iceland. The catches are good at this time, as is the size of salmon and most fish are between 10 and 18 lbs. Over the season the average weight is around 8 lbs. Throughout the season anglers are asked to release any large salmon. We will fish the river with 8 anglers, the group should expect to catch between 150 and 250 fish during an average week here at this time. Obviously this is salmon fishing and nothing is certain, depending on both conditions and ability those figures above should be realised.
What makes this trip even more special? As well as the four guides looking after each looking after 2 fishers, you will have myself and another member of my team hosting the group, ensuring you have the best tuition and fishing advice possible during your week. We will also look after all your requirements in and around the lodge.
We have secured one of the best weeks of the season on the 8th - 15th July 2020 [ Wed - Wed] which is filling up fast. We have only a few rods remaining for half the week now. Please Contact me Here if youre interested and don't want to be disappointed.
Big Laxa
The big Laxa is one of a handful of rivers in Iceland that produces both big salmon and can be fished with Double Handed Rods. It's in the north of Iceland and a 40-minute flight from Reykjavik. Internal Flight is not included. The average size of salmon on this river is similar to that found in Scotland and some rivers in Norway. This is not the only similarity. This river boasts the biggest fish caught in Iceland with many 20lb salmon caught each year and an average size similar to that found on the Spey in Scotland or many Norwegian rivers.
Fishing on Big Laxa suits clients coming from the UK and Scandinavia already used to fishing bigger rivers. It has the usual format of one guide between two rods with two four hour fishing sessions. However, Again, we will host the trip providing some casting and fishing instruction as well as looking after any general requirements.
The beat fishes up to 8 rods but we will fish it with 6. Fishing will be for 4 days.
