Orkla River Norway
River Orkla Aunan Lodge
Aunan lodge is owned by Vegard Heggam, and ex Liverpool football player and passionate fly fisherman. 5 star service in a wonderful lodge with space for 12 rods with 17 of the nicest fly fishing pools you're ever likely to find.. The combined river stretch is about 5.5km, providing a length and variation that is rarely seen on Norwegian salmon rivers.
The Lodge is situated in a stunningly beautiful part of the Orkla Valley and visiting rods will instantly feel the "Love" and "Passion" the owner has for both his river and Aunan. This passion is instilled in his wonderful staff, who for me, are the best "team" i've encountered running a fishery. Knowledgable, friendly, funny and extremely passionate about the River, Beat, conservation and the Environment. Totally awesome! This is one of the things I truly love about this place and makes our stay a simply wonderful experience.
The accommodation comprises of four well equipped lodges of varying sizes. The biggest, Annfield, had 4 bedrooms, each serviced with separate toilet and shower room. The second also has four bedrooms but with only 2 shower/bathrooms. The remaining two are 2 bedroom, one toilet/shower room. All have tea/coffee facilities in a well equipped kitchen The two larger units have large seating area for guests to relax and socialise and also have a very nice, large verandah for those who enjoy a dram and cigar. There's a sauna, drying room and separate shower facility.
The dining room, bar and seating area in the main building is equally well appointed and full of charm. Our clients are served by one of the best chef's I've been lucky enough to be around and also first class waitresses. If on a diet or planning losing weight then this is not the place for you. Undoubtedly you will come away from this fishing holiday with wonderful memories, not just of the salmon fishing, but of every part.
Tom Brown and I host a nice week here on the 2nd week in July each year helping you with both your casting and salmon fishing techniques. Like all of our hosted fishing, this salmon fishing venue has been chosen to provide our clients with the best chances of fulfilling their personal requirements. In the Case of fishing rivers such as those in Norway, the key requirement is Big Salmon. But Aunan has so much more to offer, great accommodation, food and wonderful world class Salmon Pools in a very private and well run fishery.
This is one week in the year, 5th - 12th July places are limited and we try to accommodate our clients on a first come first serve basis. There are some rods available on a "non-hosted" basis the following week.
Dates for 2020
5th - 12th July
Equipment -
Rods - 13'6 - 15'
Reels - Quality Reel With at least 150 Meters of Quality 30lb Backing
Lines - Floating, Intermediate and Multi Tip Lines. Short Shooting Heads and Spey lines Work really well. Skagit Line too if the water is high and requires you to get the fly down quick.
Leader Material - 18lb - 20lb Maxima, or I will have 17 - 20lb Berkley. For those who like Flurocarbon, its up to yourself but don't cry when it breaks!
Flies - Basically take the same flies as you would to fish in Scotland in the Spring. There are no rules about treble hooks, however, as we encourage C&R then double or single hooks [if you wish] are fine. Flies such as - Tosh, Cascade, Willie Gunn, Temple Dog, Banana Fly, Green Highlander, Swallow, Durris Shrimp, Red Munro, Copper Munro, tied in doubles and tube form are good, but flies with any combination of Yellow, orange and Black will all work. Sunray Shadow is also a good choice. I'll look at the water level nearer the time to try and pick the right size of flies.
